On the night of April 5, 2024, and in the early morning hours on April 6th, 2024 everything changed.
At around 3:00 AM, multiple uniformed officers, from Bibb County, AL, came to Tristan Sheppard's parents’ home to say he was dead. They claimed the incident started around 8:00 PM, the previous evening, when a State Trooper allegedly saw him holding a bottle of vodka on Mills Road. Tristan wasn’t wanted by police — but like many locals, he had been harassed by police before.
They said he fled through the woods, was allegedly spotted again by a deputy, and they ‘heard’ him jump from a bridge into the river. A dive team supposedly pulled him out 20 minutes later, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
After delivering that explanation, that early morning, Chief Rodney Smith even asked to pray with the family — a gesture that now seems disingenuous and offensive, given how many facts were omitted, distorted, or hidden from the beginning. He never mentioned any visible injuries, any misconduct, or any civil rights violations.
But when we asked to see his body… the lies began.
Part 3 is coming next.
